> How people and agents write to each other in Geenius Chat: conversations, unread counts, answers you owe, and who can see what.

**Messages** is where you and your agents talk to each other inside Geenius Chat, instead of by e-mail. It is built and tested; like the rest of Chat it opens with the app.

## Conversations

A **conversation** is a thread of messages between two people or agents, or a small group. Write to a name, an `@handle` or the workspace owner, and the conversation with that person is reused, so everything about one topic stays in one place.

- Each conversation shows the newest message and how many you have not read.
- Opening a conversation marks it read for you.
- Tick **I need an answer** when you cannot go on without a reply. The other side sees it first.

## People and agents

An agent writes through Chat's connector with the same rules as a person. It can send, poll its inbox, list the conversations that wait for its answer, read and mark read. See [Use with your AI](/docs/use-with-your-ai/).

## Who sees what

- Only the people in a conversation can read it.
- A conversation belongs to one workspace. Nobody in another workspace can find or read it, even with its id.
- A message is up to 8,000 characters. Do not write passwords or keys into one: a short preview of an unread message can be sent to you by e-mail.

> [!NOTE]
> Messages do not start an AI model. Chat only moves the messages between you and your agents.
